Captain's ReportTested by Captain Tom ShacklefordWow. One word. One syllable.Aficionados of powerful Personal Watercraft realize just how much can be packed into a simple sentiment. About the same amount of energy that can be packed into a 155 horsepower supercharged 3 cylinder Rotax engine and tucked neatly into the all new 2004 Sea-Doo RXP.Combining the muscle car mindset of the 1970’s with the space age styling of the new millennium, Sea-Doo seeks to stake claim to being the “Big Daddy Mr. Atlas” of the PWC world.DesignLet’s start with that styling. Sleek lines, crisp edges and slashing angles lend themselves toward aerodynamics. In turn aerodynamics lending itself to increased speed and fuel economy through decreased drag. Ergonomically, the rider assumes a position not unlike a road racing motorcyclist – the craft’s lines swept in where legs can be snugged against the fiberglass reinforced hull. The rearview mirrors are incorporated into this motif, hidden in the upswept lines created by the cowling’s design.This sporty behemoth unrolled the tape measure almost 121 inches nose to tail. With a beam of 47.2 inches and 43 inches in height, the RXP’s fiberglass reinforced hull is a commanding presence.InstrumentationWhat would form be without function?At the line of sight forward and above the handlebars, the instrumentation is highlighted by a 16 function digital display and is flanked by analog speedo and tach. Ignition is permitted via the employment of the Digitally Encoded Security System (D.E.S.S.) within the safety lanyard kill switch. Without this connection – that is specifically programmed for use with your Sea-Doo – it will not start. On the other hand, your D.E.S.S. system can be programmed to operate up to 8 units for a single owner. A second lanyard provided with the RXP is the “Learning Key.” Of immeasurable value, this lanyard has been programmed to limit RPM’s and top speed. New and inexperienced riders will benefit from the reduction in power delivery.At low speed or off-throttle operation, the O.P.A.S. system kicks in to insure adequate steerage remains available.At any time the RXP is underway the Variable Trim System may be utilized to adjust the water jet nozzle angle.Aiding in the overall quiet nature of RXP is the water cooled exhaust pipe and the D-Sea-Bel sound reduction system. This is perhaps the one area where the RXP parts ways with the Detroit muscle of the ‘70’s and their throaty roar. This Sea-Doo is acoustically an unobtrusive presence on the waters. Plenty of PowerTake a breath before you read about the power plant. Sea-Doo’s selection of the supercharged Rotax 4-TEC intercooled 4 –stroke 215 Horsepower engine makes this the highest performance 4-stroke PWC to date.Perhaps you are familiar with the 4 –TEC; Sea-Doo uses the motor in other applications. In this version however, with the addition of intercooling, horsepower was increased from the original 185. Mathematically, that’s a difference of 30 H.P., producing what Tim McKercher calls “Arm straightening acceleration!” Tim is the head of watercraft media, public relations and special events at Sea-Doo for North America. His enthusiasm for the RXP’s muscle-bound reputation is catching. After all, the 0-30 MPH elapsed time was a consistent 2.2 seconds. Before you can even READ the words ‘time to plane’, the RXP was on one in an amazing 1.15 seconds! The RideWeighing in at 790 pounds dry, those extra 30 supercharged horses are a necessity and boy, do they deliver! With a 185 pound pilot on board and half of a tank of gas, conditions for testing were ideal: 81 degrees, 80% humidity, winds just over 4 MPH producing minimal seas.At quarter throttle, average speed was 36 MPH noting a 2.8 Gallons Per Hour (GPH) burn rate. Maintaining half throttle operation achieved almost 48 MPH needing 5 GPH to go that fast. At full throttle the RXP ran at a blazing 65 MPH.So, there it is, the Sea-Doo RXP. While the competition is playing catch up, you’ll have time to catch your breath and say, “Wow!”

- Top speed for the Sea-Doo RXP is 65.5 mph (105.4 kph), burning 17.4 gallons per hour (gph) or 65.86 liters per hour (lph).
- Best cruise for the Sea-Doo RXP is 35.9 mph (57.8 kph), and the boat gets 12.82 miles per gallon (mpg) or 5.45 kilometers per liter (kpl), giving the boat a cruising range of 183 miles (294.51 kilometers).
