All fuel consumption numbers are the total for all engines in the boat. Speeds are measured with Stalker ProSports radar gun or GPS. Fuel consumption (gallons per hour) measured with Floscan digital fuel-flow meter or by on-board factory-installed diagnostic instruments. Range is based on 90% of published fuel capacity. Sound levels determined using Radio Shack digital decibel meter on A scale. 68 dBA is the level of normal conversation. Time to plane is measured from start of acceleration to formation of rooster tail behind boat.

    Captain's Report

Ocean Alexander 100 Motoryacht profile shot
The new Ocean Alexander 100 Motoryacht is offered in either an open flybridge, or skylounge version.

    General Construction

The Ocean Alexander 100 Motoryacht is fiberglass which has been coated with a polyurethane paint and epoxy-based primers. This gives the yacht its high gloss and long-lasting color retention. This process also minimizes maintenance and eliminate gel coat oxidation.

    Lamination.

Hull sides and the superstructure have high-density structural foam coring and the hull has solid fiberglass infusion lamination. This same high-density foam is also found in the stringer system throughout the yacht. Cross-knit directional carbon fiber is used in high stress areas for added structural integrity and torsional strength.

    Sound and vibration

are reduced through various methods to provide a quiet and comfortable ride. Bulkheads have multiple insulation barriers with sound reflective materials, air pockets and flexible isolation mounts. Ocean Alexander tells us that these techniques result in noise level reductions producing sound readings that well exceed ISO-6954 standards. Marine-grade aluminum beams under all decks and ceilings provide greater rigidity, reduce weight, and eliminate creaking underway, or as guests walk about the yacht.Being an ocean-going yacht, particular attention has also been paid to preventing water intrusion. For example, all windows are frameless, and all bulkheads are weather-tight.

    Interior Decking.

Solid wood floor planks, matching interior wood selection, custom made for Ocean Alexander with spans of over 8', are used in interiors with exception of the crew area. (There, Amtico is used for ease of cleaning and economical replacement.) Outside, solid old-growth teak is used on floor with intricate edging showing off Ocean Alexander’ craftsmanship.

    Special Flooring.

Because changes in humidity and temperature in the harsh marine environment, particularly when shipping from southern to northern latitudes can easily warp interior wood decks, Ocean Alexander has a proven solution. Where teak is not used, Ocean Alexander employs special laminated wood made in the US by Saroyan Company at its state-of-the-art plant in Kentucky. This composite has a top solid wood surface with the same wear capacity as solid ¾’’ wood flooring. It uses 9 layers of European birch assembled in a cross-grain direction with a top layer of exotic hardwood to match the interior of the boat.

    Features Inspection

    Main Deck

The designs of Evan K. Marshal are ever present in this traditional configuration, with a single level deck running from the salon to the head of the galley. From there, it’s up two steps to the casual gathering and dining area forward. Ocean Alexander allows personalizing the décor to match an owner's preference with a generous allowance that also covers the bedspreads and soft goods. Let’s explore each of these areas in greater detail.

    Salon and Dining

The 100 Motoryacht offers formal dining for 8 while still being able to maintain a huge salon for gathering and entertaining. To starboard are both a wet bar and a day head, both within close proximity to the salon and dining areas. Electric shades from Hunter Douglas are over the windows.

    Galley

The galley in the 100 is quite unusual for a motoryacht of nearly any size. First of all it is quite large. Secondly, it has been design so that the galley can be isolated from the rest of the yacht in the traditional fashion -- or, can be used as a "country kitchen" with an adjacent raised bar and dinette. In this configuration, the owner and guests might be welcome in the galley for breakfast or a quick lunch. No matter if the the galley is strictly for staff or for guests as well, it will easily accommodate the needs of a master chef to create gourmet meals. It has a large stand-up refrigerator/freezer, wine cooler, 4-burner stove top, deep sink, dishwasher and pantry cabinets. All paneling and cabinetry are solid wood. Perspicuus Lux Lucis granite countertops provide ample room for food prep. Decking is White Aurora marble.

    Brand Names Count.

Veteran large motoryacht owners know that while there may be some minor bragging rights with exotic, terribly expensive "high-status" brand names in kitchen appliances -- when they go on the fritz, there is rarely authorized service nearby. That is why Ocean Alexander has carefully selected all appliances to be both high-quality and widely distributed around the world. The sink is Franke Professional Series with a Whirlpool garbage disposal. There’s a 30" (76.2 cm) Thermador electric cooktop and matching oven. The refrigerator/freezer is Sub-Zero. An additional freezer is located forward of the dinette. A 24” (61 cm) Viking microwave resides over the range. A 24" (61 cm) Fisher & Paykel dishwasher takes care of the cleanup, as does a 15” (38 cm) Whirlpool trash compactor.

    Casual Dining

Forward of the galley, and adjacent to the lower helm, is a more relaxed dining area that will probably be used mostly by the owner and family when guests are not aboard. This may even used by guests for an informal breakfast or a quick lunch between other activities. When owners or guests are not aboard, the crew will be happy to use it for all three meals instead of their tight facilities in the crew quarters below.

    Helm

Evan Marshal also designed both of the helm stations for the Ocean Alexander 100 with cues taken from the builder's much larger 120 model. It incorporates a “floating” display pod and matching wood/Ultraleather. A weather-tight pantograph door to starboard provides access to the sidedeck from the lower helm. The electric helm seat is a Stidd. With the flying bridge version this helm station will likely only be used in adverse weather. In the skylounge version this helm station will be eliminated and can be converted into a desk or more storage space.

    Bridge Deck

The Ocean Alexander 100 Motoryacht is offered with an upper deck in a choice of two configurations, open or skylounge -- with each having its own distinct advantages depending on how the yacht is to be used. Both will have an included 15’ (4.6 m) tender with a 70-hp outboard on the aft boat deck which will be launched/retrieved by a 2,500 lb. (1,134 kg) hydraulic davit. Both versions also include a four-person lighted Jacuzzi in a custom fiberglass enclosure.

In the open configuration the flying bridge is exposed to the elements providing fresh air and sunshine.

    In the open configuration

, as the name implies, the guests receive the benefit of an exceeding large amount of deck space. This provides Ocean Alexander with the freedom to add plenty of entertainment features, such as a wet bar, table seating for 8 and a Jacuzzi, along with room for storing a tender or watercraft, all while barely impeding on the roomy atmosphere. Access is from the aft deck via a fiberglass staircase.

Ocean Alexander 100 Motoryacht open configuration
In the “open configuration” the focus is on maximizing space for moving about while still being able to take advantage of individual gathering areas.
    Ocean Alexander 100 Motoryacht tender
Whether the tender faces forward or athwartships, when launched at anchor or in the harbor, there’s still plenty of room for deck chaise lounges for sun bathing.

    For the Skylounge version

, Ocean Alexander again relied on yacht designer Evan K. Marshal. The result is a true second salon with an elevated view and a high level of luxury, complete with a wet bar and day head. A second access to this deck runs from the formal dining area into the enclosed skylounge allowing a transition while remaining protected from the elements.

Ocean Alexander 100 Motoryacht upper deck
The skylounge version encloses a good portion of the upper deck, in effect creating a “penthouse” on the water.
Ocean Alexander 100 Motoryacht skylounge layout
The enclosed skylounge keeps the helm and guests protected in a climate controlled environment. A smaller dinette and wet bar are still present and a second day head has been added. This arrangement has the advantage of also providing outdoor seating.
    Ocean Alexander 100 Motoryacht views
While remaining enclosed, the skylounge still offers excellent views of the surroundings and the ability to easily get out into the fresh air through sliding doors aft.

    Accommodations Deck

The lower decks are accessed from stairs in the salon that lead to a central marble foyer. Custom-designed stone is all water-jet cut and include stainless steel inserts for durability. All bulkheads in the hallway are fabric covered. The mattresses are innerspring with independent his/hers construction to ensure "disturb-free movement" during sleep.

    Ocean Alexander 100 Motoryacht accomodations
The accommodations are in the forward half of the lower deck and all staterooms are accessed from a central foyer and passageway. All staterooms are ensuite with separate stall showers.

    Head Compartments.

All staterooms on the 100 Motoryacht are ensuite. The countertops in the heads are all Svevo marble with china sinks, and floors are Ancient Crepito marble for all but the master head, which gets a separate treatment. The showers compartments are seamless fiberglass with one-piece crystal clear glass doors with stainless steel hinges fastened to granite frames. These doors are custom made for Ocean Alexander and provide superior transparency and reflectiveness. Also, “minimalist and transparent water strips” provide a unique “Crystal Shower” unique to Ocean Alexander.

    Master Stateroom

As expected, the 100 Motoryacht features a full-beam master, and in the version shown here Ocean Alexander installed the popular “his and hers” head arrangement separated by a common shower. What makes this dual bathroom both possible and practical is the fact that there is a large, walk-in closet for madam to port and an adequate hanging locker for the man of the cabin to starboard. This stateroom is entered through double doors and has a chest of drawers to port and a love seat and more storage to starboard. Like virtually everything else in the boat most of what is seen in both the drawings and in the images can be modified or changed to suit an individual's desires.

    Ocean Alexander 100 Motoryacht
The master stateroom has a center-mounted king-sized berth. A single shower separates twin heads. Counters and flooring are White Aurora marble.

The king size berth is center mounted for minimum discomfort from ships movement. The same electric shades from the salon and formal dining areas are also present here in the master where there are six large vertical hull side windows which provide spectacular views when underway.

    Special Windows.

Custom engineered windows are fabricated from sandwiched glass and aluminum beams creating the strength required of ocean rated vessels along with increasing light and visibility. The same technology in the master bath greatly increase window visibility over the previous portlight designs.

    Forward VIP

The forward VIP offers a queen berth and vanity along with the expected cedar hanging locker and ensuite head with separate shower. Photo by D & K Yacht Photography.

At the bow, the VIP encompasses the expected quality woodwork and level of luxury demanded of the Ocean Alexander shipyard. A queen berth is fixed on the centerline of the hull. A hanging locker to starboard is cedar lined with a vanity or desk adjacent. To port is a modest head with walk-in shower. It is important to note that this stateroom has been moved back from the forepeak of the boat and has good walk-around access to the queen bed on three sides.

    Guest Staterooms

Between the master and VIP staterooms are two guest staterooms with twin berths that convert to queens. All countertops are Chiampo Blue marble.

    Crew Accommodations

Crew quarters on the Ocean Alexander 100 Motoryacht are large and comfortable. With such an emphasis placed on chartering, an equal amount of emphasis needed to be placed on where, and how, to berth the crew. The crew quarters are located just abaft the engine room in the stern of the boat which we have found to be the best place on this size boat. The captain gets a queen-sized berth with an ensuite head. This is ideal, particularly for the husband/wife teams of captain and chef. Two additional crew staterooms can sleep three more crew, with a single berth to port and bunk beds in the starboard cabin. Both share a head which is up against a separate crew galley/dining area. The size of these crew quarters in on the large size, which is commendable. The location at the stern and access to the swim platform gives the crew a place to hang out when the day's chores are done without bothering the guests or owners.

    Turn Key Delivery

Smaller boats have long touted the “turn key” feature to add to the attractiveness of the buyers experience. Sometimes this just includes bedding and towels, other times it adds dishes and cutlery. At Ocean Alexander it includes all of the above, plus full fuel tanks, all safety equipment (fenders, lines, throw ring, fire extinguishers…etc), a full spare parts package (bilge pumps, LED lights, zincs, filters, wiper blades, touch up paint, fuses, engine parts kit from CAT and Onan…etc.), a wheel puller for the propellers, a 10 man life raft, full china sets and cookware right down to the salt and pepper shakers, a toaster, electric mixer and measuring cup… just to name a few items.

    Performance

We tested the Ocean Alexander 100 Motoryacht on a calm day off Fort Lauderdale. With an empty weight of 229,900 lbs. (104,281 kg), 75% fuel and six people, we had an estimated test weight of 254,260 lbs. (115,330 kg). With a pair of 1925-hp CAT 3-32 ACERTs turning 50x46 1/2 Nibral props, we reached a top speed of 23 kts at 2300 rpm. At that speed, we were burning 206 gph giving her an endurance of 401 nm. Best economy, of course, is subjective, but she’ll run with a range in the upper 400 nms at anything over 2000 rpm. At the CAT recommended cruise of 80% load, we were at 2076 rpm and just under 20 kts with a 170 gph fuel burn. That meant a range of 485 nm. It’s in displacement mode that she really shines. Anywhere from 1250 rpm down will have the range in the thousands of nautical miles with speeds as high as 12.5 kts. At idle, she’ll cruise at 7.2 kts for over 5700 nm.

    Handling

She handles quite well, too. We had calm seas so we can’t validate her rough conditions handling, but long experience with Ocean Alexander has shown that these yachts are well suited to handle less than ideal conditions. She’s well-stabilized and penetrating our self-generated waves showed a hull that slides clean through waves while keeping spray low for a dry ride. It’s in close-quarters that she continues to impress with exemplary handling around the dock. She’s still in the realm of being owner/operated for her size and as such, her docile handling characteristics will bode well for her owners. We brought this 100-footer (30 m) into and out of a dock only slightly more than her length with yachts both fore and aft and did so with surgical precision. Unlike past models that had us questioning the logic of small thruster size, this boat, with her 55-hp bow thruster and 40-hp stern thruster were more than adequate. Adding to her handling qualities were her rudders at 9 sq. ft. (0.8 sq. m) each. These allowed the Ocean Alexander 100 Motoryacht to be controlled with only a minimum of headway, which made her handling around the dock remarkably responsive.

    Steady Now

She’s also a well-stabilized boat. A pair of 5’3” (1.6 m) fins handled the chores underway and zero speed stabilizers added comfort while at rest. In turns, she leans just 5-degrees into the turns before her weight would bring her back and start a slight outboard lean. At this point the stabilizers kicked in and brought her back to level, all hardly noticeable to anyone not looking for it.Her ability to meet the docking and cruising plans of the typical Ocean Alexander customer will still be present in her light load displacement draft of 5’6” (1.7 m) and a full load draft of 6’5” (2.0 m). This is an important consideration for boat of this size and we like the shoal draft option which might come in handy when docked at home.

    Observations

While clever engineering plays a big part in the roominess of the Ocean Alexander 100 Motoryacht, she’s also more spacious because of her 23’ (7.01 m) beam. Clearly this ocean-going yacht can handle all sorts of activities, including entertaining a large crowd for both cocktail and dinner parties, as well as local sight-seeing day trips.
